In July 2009, U.S. News & World Report ranked The Johns Hopkins Hospital #1 among American hospitals for the 19th consecutive year. Johns Hopkins remains the nation’s leading medical school recipient of research funds from the National Institutes of Health. In 2006, the Johns Hopkins Office of CME received “Accreditation with Commendation” for 6 years, the highest ranking issued by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). Hopkins CME has been recognized as a center for “Best Practices” as a resource to ACCME accredited providers.

The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is an Evidence-based Practice Center (EPC), one of 13 such centers in North America funded in 2002 by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The primary mission of the Johns Hopkins Evidence-based Practice Center is to generate and synthesize knowledge so evidence-based information can be effectively applied to medical and public health practices. The Hopkins Evidence-based Practice Center has performed formal systematic literature reviews for the development of practice guidelines in the areas of cardiology, radiology, kidney disease, eye disease, cancer, endocrinology, hypertension, prevention practices, and infectious disease, as well as for publication.

In 2007, Johns Hopkins published the results of the systematic review of 68,000 literature citations regarding the effectiveness of CME. This study, funded by a federal grant from AHRQ, is the largest analysis of CME ever undertaken and is available online at www.ahrq.gov/clinic/tp/cmetp.htm.

Through the Johns Hopkins International Office, Hopkins partners with other medical institutions around the world to help undertake research initiatives, provide Hopkins' CME programs, and to help achieve the highest level of patient care. Hopkins international affiliations include programs and projects in China, Singapore, Lebanon, India, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as in countries in Europe, and South and Central America. Through our Hopkins International Patient Services, between 3000 to 5000 patients with acute medical conditions come to Hopkins each year for its state-of-the-art medical care.

In 2008, all CME activities of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will fall under the authority and responsibility of Johns Hopkins through a joint sponsorship agreement.
